Phuket Nightlife

Although there is some nightlife in Phuket Town, the real scene is in Patong Beach. Once said to have one of the best late night scenes in Thailand, it was well known for its all-night parties in the bars around Soi Sunset. However, if anywhere has been affected by the recent social order crackdowns it is here. Not only is the 2am closing strictly enforced, but the governor has actually told party animals to go elsewhere. As a result, Patong Beach is busy trying to reinvent its nightlife scene in a guise the puritans in government will not recognise.

Other than the nightlife scene Patong has many bars and bar areas. The largest concentration is around Bangla Road, between Beach Road and Rat U Tip Road, where you'll find loads of beer bars, restaurants and shops. Soi Crocodile, off Bangla, is the home of the ladyboys, who perform nightly in both the street and the saloon at the end of the soi, while several other sois off Bangla feature little more than back to back bars.

More absurdity has been directed at the gogo bars which have been told they must dispense with the poles and ensure the girls wear a great deal more than a smile and shoes. Despite the spoilsports, Patong Beach's nightlife remains very real and very big, with the emphasis on beer bars, of which there are dozens, if not hundreds. And everyone hopes that one day soon the party-poopers will come to their senses and realise that it is not possible to be a truly international resort if all the bars close at 2am.
