Bars in Koh Samui
There are hundreds of bars on the island catering to all sorts of tastes. The ones listed below are pub-type bars which I know well and am happy to recommend. Beer bars are included in the nightlife section.
Chaweng Beach
Wigan Pier
Far end of Soi Green Mango,
Chaweng Main Street.
Partly owned and managed by former Rugby League player Chris. Small but friendly bar with pool and good conversation. The goal posts were banned but look for the rugby ball shaped sign.
Legends
Chaweng Main Street.
Legends is essentially a bar, which is surprising as I would have expected a food operation in this location. The décor features pictures of film and pop stars while the drinks menu is heavily geared towards cocktails. At the back, however, are plenty of beers and a supportive quote by Louis Pasteur: "Alcohol is the most hygienic of beverages."
Ark Bar, The
The Ark Resort,
Central Samui Road just north of Soi Green Mango.
This is a fun bar on the beach. There is normally a good gathering as the sun goes down, with the more active playing beach volleyball. At night this is a popular place to chill out away from the noise and activity in the nearby Soi Green Mango.
Tropical Murphys
Central Samui Road.
Typical Irish bar out of a box. Large pub-style operation with lots of wood, old pics and TVs in every corner. Normally busy with Sharon and Darren enjoying the real "beach" experience. Sometimes there is quite good live music.
Bophut
(Fishermans Village)
Lots of pubs on this strip, starting from the pier and heading west.
Billabong Surf Club
An Ausssie theme pub that is popular with locals as well as a good spot to eat or watch the sea.
Steves Inn The Pub
Run by a friendly Englishman this is a good spot to catch up with English chat, watch sport or just sit and stare at the sea from the terrace at the back of the bar.
Frog and Gecko Pub
Raphael, a formidable American lady, holds court in this bar. Good place to bitch about all that is wrong with the world, or anything else for that matter. Good advice and the current gossip will be delved out. Lamai Beach
Red Fox too
Small soi opposite Billabong Bar,
Lamai Main Street.
Favourite of Lamai residents and particularly well known for Sunday lunch (5 pm). Certainly not silver service but a good feed!
Allan, the boss, comes from Carlisle and is well known for his bad jokes.

Churchill Arms
Lamai High Street
(south of central crossroads).
English run and owned, this is very like a small local in the UK. Basic food and sports TV compete with general ambiance and friendly service.
The Round Bars
This is a collection of central bars around a boxng ring. Saturday nights is Lady Boxing Night . It is normally pretty tame, but sometimes a luckless girl gets knocked out, however is recent times it has been more boy boxing, or 'any idiot who will get in the ring' boxing! |
